How To Practice Detachment With Drug Addict
One of the main principles that helps a person in dealing with struggling drug addict is detachment. The basic idea is to separate oneself emotionally from the harmful effects of kinship with the addict or alcoholic. It is not the complete separation or abandoning the relationship. A person should care for drug addict but should not feel responsible for them. This is a very difficult task.
Practicing detachment should be made easier as time passes. Few things which can be practiced in order to have detachment with the struggling addict in life are:
- Don’t do things which they must be doing themselves.
- Don’t hesitate to rescue them or save them from natural consequences.
- Don’t try to cover up their mistakes or disturbing situations.
- Don’t save them from crisis or financial situations.
- Don’t try to correct them.
- There should not be any guilt about them
Detachment is not considered as discarding of emotions. A person should have the power to influence the intensity of emotions, by concentrating on the positive perspective of the situation. A person can also alter thinking to remove irrational beliefs which might be leading to emotional anxiety.
